If you own a blackberry curve do you HAVE TO have a data package?

Like without it, it wont work. Im talking about AT&T and i dont want to pay 35 a month for 2 phones for the unlimited data. Is it required? Also if i buy it, will the sales rep tell me i need the data package or it wont work or can i use the curve without a data package?

I just got a new blackberry pearl 8100 and it has the same sim card I used in my oldschool phone but I cant find my contacts anywhere on it? I had about 100 on my old phone and I am not looking forward to rewriting them. Can anyone help?
